Ride Legal in NSW
E-bike rules in NSW are changing. Here is what you need to know before you buy and ride. Every bike on our website shows whether it is road legal in NSW.
The rules right now
- 25 km/h assist limit. The motor must stop helping once you reach 25 km/h. You can pedal faster under your own power.
- Pedal assist. The motor should only help while you are pedalling.
- Throttle limited to 6 km/h. A throttle can only move the bike at walking pace without pedalling.
- Power limit. The maximum continuous rated power is currently 500W.
- Helmet. You must wear an approved bicycle helmet.
What changes in 2029
From 1 March 2029, only e-bikes certified to the European standard EN 15194 will be allowed on NSW roads, and the maximum power drops to 250W. Look for the EN 15194 label on the bike or in its paperwork.
Enforcement
Since August 2026, NSW Police can inspect, seize and dispose of e-bikes that do not meet the rules when they are used on public roads.
How we label our bikes
- Road legal in NSW (yellow). EN 15194 certified, 250W, pedal assist to 25 km/h. Legal now and after 2029. This is our full Mamba range.
- Road legal until 2029 (white). 500W, pedal assist to 25 km/h, throttle to 6 km/h. Legal on NSW roads until 1 March 2029, but not EN 15194. This is the Toland Huntsman and Huntsman ST.
- Private land only (amber). Higher powered bikes like the Toland Huntsman Plus. Not road legal and can't be ridden on public roads, footpaths or shared paths.
